Melanie Hamrick is finding the humor in her and fiancé Mick Jagger’s age gap.

On Thursday, May 8, the 37-year-old former ballerina and author attended the New York City Ballet 2025 Spring Gala. When asked about her relationship with the Rolling Stones frontman, 81 — and their 44-year age gap — she had a playful response.

“He’s younger than me,” Hamrick told Page Six, laughing. “He’s amazing, really is.”

Hamrick, who shares 8-year-old son Deveraux “Devi” Octavian with the rock legend, also discussed her son’s dancing skills with the outlet. In the past, she’s posted videos of Devi rocking out to his dad’s music on tour and showing off some other impromptu moves reminiscent of his famous father. “It’s amazing,” Hamrick said. “It’s natural. It’s in his genes. He just, like, moves.”

“No one taught him,” she added. “No one influenced him. He moved like that before he even saw one of his dad’s concerts. It’s still there.”

Jagger and Hamrick have had much to celebrate recently. In an interview published in April by French publication Paris Match, the former ballerina confirmed that she and the “Paint It Black” singer were engaged.

The duo first met in February 2014 in Japan. He was touring with the Stones, while she was on the road with the American Ballet Theatre. Four months later, Jagger invited her to join him in Zurich as things became romantic. They welcomed their son in 2016.

“We’ve been engaged two or three years,” Hamrick told Paris Match, before clarifying that they don’t plan to tie the knot. “Maybe one day we’ll marry, maybe not. We are so happy in our current life that I would be too afraid to change anything.”

In the same interview, she gave some insight into the secret behind the pair’s relationship: “We try to support each other, be there for each other, and make sure everyone is happy. That’s all that matters to me and all I strive for.”

While promoting her debut novel First Position in 2023, Hamrick played things coy when asked by PEOPLE about the meaning behind her diamond ring. “I mean, I have to giggle because did Mick give me the ring? Yes. Is it for that finger? Yes,” she said at the time, referring to the sparkling piece of jewelry.

“But are we like horny teenagers where we’re giving each other… In my mind, it’s a promise ring. We’ll be immature and call it a promise ring,” she added.

As for what’s next for Hamrick, she told Page Six this week that she’s currently working on her third book — “a modern retelling of Giselle” — which she called a “big undertaking.” She is also the author of two other titles, 2023’s First Position and 2024’s The Unraveling.
