Kate Middleton Brings Back Millennial Trend with Baker Boy Hat

Kate Middleton has long been a trend setter and might be reviving a fashion fad from the 2000s.

On April 14, the Princess of Wales’ office at Kensington Palace released a new video of her visiting the picturesque Lake District in the U.K. with a young group of Scouts, of which she serves as joint president. Princess Kate, 43, dressed warm for the outdoorsy outing in a cozy cropped bomber jacket with turtleneck and skinny jeans (another beloved millennial trend), topped with a green tweed baker boy hat.

Baker boy hats made a splash in the late 1990s and early 2000s when pop stars like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Lopez brought the style from the stage to the street. The trend faded but might be having a comeback with Princess Kate leading the way.

The Princess of Wales has long cycled hats into her royal rotation and sported a similar green knit baker boy cap when she visited the Great Tower Scout Camp in Cumbria in 2013. Kate became joint president of the Scouts in 2020, sharing the royal role with Queen Elizabeth’s cousin, Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent.

Princess Kate was a Brownie with her sister, Pippa, when they were young girls, and she said at the Scouts headquarters in 2019 that she’d like her kids, Prince George, 11, and Princess Charlotte, 9, to get involved, too. (At the time, her youngest son, Prince Louis, now 6, was just a baby.)

“She said she would like them to go into the scouting community because she loves what it stands for — that it’s a very open and inclusive way into life,” said Lauren Noble, who helped show Prince William’s wife around. “She said it would be a great thing for them to get involved in.”

Princess Kate spoke about the peace nature brings her in the new video, filmed last month, where she joined Chief Scout Dwayne Fields for a walk in the woods before they met up with some Scouts enrolled in the program.

“I find it a very spiritual and very intense emotional reconnection I suppose, these environments,” Princess Kate told Fields. “Not everyone has that same relationship perhaps with nature, but it is so therefore meaningful for me as a place to balance and find a sort of sense of peace and reconnection in what is otherwise a very busy world.”

Elsewhere in the message, she mentioned, “What’s so fantastic about Scouts is it’s the same foundations that have always been there, and despite how different the modern day world is now, actually, it still resonates with so many young people and it’s making such a massive difference to them.”

The Princess of Wales has been vocal about the solace nature brought her when she was undergoing treatment for cancer, news she announced in March 2024. Princess Kates shared in September that she completed chemotherapy and relayed with “relief” in January that she is in remission.

On Mothering Sunday in March, which is the British equivalent of Mother’s Day in the U.S., Kate sent a message celebrating Mother Nature.

“Over the past year, nature has been our sanctuary. This Mother’s Day, let us celebrate Mother Nature and recognize how our bond with the natural world can help not only nurture our inner selves, but remind us too of the role we play within the rich tapestry of life,” she wrote, signing the message “C” as shorthand for her first name, Catherine.
