An inmate at the Toronto South Detention Centre will face a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of another inmate who died after being assaulted late last month, police say.
In a news release Tuesday, Toronto police said they were first called about an assault at the correctional facility just after 6 p.m. on March 24.
The victim — 27-year-old Toronto man Mangok Akol — was assaulted by another inmate, investigators allege, before he was taken to hospital in critical condition. Police did not provide any further information about the incident.
Akol then died in hospital last Thursday, investigators say.
The alleged attacker was initially charged with aggravated assault, according to the news release, but those charges were being upgraded to second-degree murder. The 32-year-old was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
This marks Toronto’s eighth homicide of 2025, police say.
