A cruise ship passenger has died in a tragic accident while visiting a private island.
The 73-year-old British tourist — who has not been identified — was travelling on the Holland America cruise liner Nieuw Amsterdam when the ship stopped at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas on Saturday.
The woman jumped onto a jet ski to explore the crystal blue waters but lost control of the watercraft and collided with a rock.
Medical staff rushed the woman’s aid but she could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force has launched an investigation into the fatal incident.
A spokesman for Holland America confirmed that they were in contact with the victim’s family.
“We are in contact with the guest’s family and doing everything we can to support them during this difficult time,” Holland America told New York Post.
“The accident is currently being investigated by the Bahamian authorities.
“Out of respect for the family and guest, we do not have further information to share.”
