Adam Caporn lands Boomers head coach job

Adam Caporn has won the Boomers head coaching role, taking over following the departure of Brian Goorjian after serving as an assistant in recent years.

The 42-year-old West Australian is currently an assistant coach with the NBA’s Washington Wizards.

Caporn was head coach of Basketball Australia’s centre of excellence at the AIS from 2014-21 and has more recently worked in the US as head coach of the G-League’s Long Island Nets and as an assistant at the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets.

ESPN reports that Caporn got the job after being in a group of five finalists with Quin Snyder, Gordon Herbert, Will Weaver and Bret Brielmaier, with Atlanta Hawks coach Snyder taking himself out of the running because of the time commitments required.

Caporn worked under previous Boomers coaches Andrej Lemanis then Goorjian at the last four major tournaments, helping Australia to their historic Olympic bronze medal in Tokyo in 2021.

“It is an incredible honour to be part of the Boomers program. To step into the role of head coach is truly a dream come true,” said Caporn.

“I am deeply grateful to Basketball Australia for their trust in me and to the entire Australian basketball community for the invaluable experiences and opportunities I’ve had from grassroots development to the Olympic stage.

“I want to extend a special thank you to Andrej Lemanis and Brian Goorjian for bringing me into the Boomers coaching staff – your mentorship and contributions to this program have been truly inspiring,.”

Melbourne United coach Dean Vickerman has been appointed to a new role as Boomers associate head coach, taking over the head coaching responsibilities if there is a clash with Caporn’s NBA schedule.
